Week 10 Reading notes- Jataka Tales (Turtle)

These are my reading notes for How the Turtle Saved His Own Life.

Plot:
- A king had a lake in the courtyard for the princes to play in- which they did often- swimming and sailing boats in.
-The kind asked the men to put fish into the lake.
- The boys were very excited to see the fish, along with the fish there was a turtle, which they had never seen before.
-The boys were afraid of the turtle, they feared that it was a demon. They went crying to their father, saying, "there is a demon in the lake!"
- The king then ordered his men to catch the demon and bring it back to the palace, when they did so, the boys were afraid and ran away.
- The king really loved his sons and ordered his men to kill the turtle.
- The men contemplated the many ways to kill it, ultimately one man said to throw the turtle into the lake where it flows over rocks into the river.
- The turtle heard what the man suggested and cried saying, "What have I done to deserve such a cruel punishment?!"
- When the king heard the turtle's fear, he demanded that he be thrown into the river immediately.
-The turtle laughed to himself on his way to the river, knowing that he would be safe in the water.

Writing Ideas:
- I would really like to rewrite this story from the POV of the turtle. I think it would be interesting to show his thought process. I also think it would be important to give him more character traits than just "the turtle," I think that by giving him more personal characteristics readers will be more engaged with the story.
