Week 9 Reading: Mahabharata Part D

The specific reading that I chose for this week was The Night Raid

Plot Overview:
- Ashwatthaman is seeking vengeance for the death of Drona by the death of the Pandavas in their sleep.
- Duryodhana was visited on the battlefield by Ashwatthaman and his companions. He gave permission to Ashwatthaman to attack the Pandavas while they were asleep. He went into the darkness to glut his hunger for vengeance- the men moved stealthily towards the tents of their foremen.
- As the men approached the Pandava camp, an terrifying figure rose up against them, but Ashwatthaman was not afraid. He fought with him until he perceived that he was the god Shiva (The Blue-Throated Destroyer). Ashwatthaman drew back and lit a fire on an altar to worship the powerful deity. Having nothing to sacrifice to him, he cast his own body into the flames. Accepting this sacrifice, he entered his body saying "For the sake of Krishna, have I protected the sons of Draupadi, but now their doom hath come."
-Ashwatthaman entered the camp and sought vengeance.
- The battle proceeds and lasts a long time and is very brutal

Writing Notes:
- One thing that really stood out to me in this story is the sacrifice made by Ashwatthaman to Shiva. I think that it is extremely compelling and it is something that I would really like to focus on for this section. Maybe I would focus on the emotions that Ashwatthaman would have been feeling at this time... Was he scared? Was he fearless in this moment? I think these emotions are something that I would really like to explore.
